WWE Smackdown 7/23/10…Who Is The Number One Contender?

Fresh off Money in the Bank PPV, Smackdown kicks off with the brand new World Heavyweight Champion, Kane.  He compares the last 13 years to when he held his little Goldfish by the tail, right above the water, the Goldfish was grasping for air, trying to get back in the water to breathe, but now that ended last Sunday night.  For one night, he was happy.  And the fans cheered him on.  He explained to Rey he did what anyone else would do, including Rey himself and cash in on the title shot after Rey was hurting after his own match.  It’s true, we have seen it before.  Kane made history by cashing in on the very same night he won Money in the Bank ladder match.  But the celebration couldn’t last because he showed it to his “vegetated” brother, The Undertaker.  He vowed he would get revenge on the person who did this to him.

Tonight, we get a number one contendership match in a best 2 of 3 falls between Rey Mysterio against Jack Swagger.  Now, what happened to that rematch clause the champion automatically gets?  Oh well, it should be a good match.

Coming up next, we get our first match of the evening.  The newly formed team of Christian and Matt Hardy taking on Drew McIntyre and “Dashing” Cody Rhodes.  It should be a good match.

An awesome match that ended when Hardy had Drew beat, but Cody kicked Matt in the tape ribs, and Christian came back fighting Cody.  Matt turned into Cody and tried to hit him, but Cody ducked and Matt hit Christian.  When that happened, Matt checked on Christian and Drew gave Matt the big kick and pinned him.  The question was asked was that punch on “accident” or on purpose for payback what happened a few weeks ago when Chrsitian walked away from his partner.  After the match, Christian checked on Matt and held out his hand to shake Matt’s, Matt was thinking about it for a second and Striker made a funny comment “The Megapowers are about to explode” and things are cool…for now.

Jack Swagger is in the back, being interviewed by Josh Matthews.  He thinks Jack was fortunate not to win the title since Kane cashed in.  Come on Josh, really?  Anyway, Jack agrees with me and says that Rey is nothing but a “liar” and cheating his way to victory, like his friend was the late, great Eddie Guerrero.  He vowed tonight, he will put Rey in a hospital bed, just like his Father was last week.

Another video from Alberto Del Rio, the same from last week.  This dude needs to debut, it’s time.

The Beautiful People….Errr I mean Lay-Cool are in the back, celebrating their title win this past Sunday and they have gifts for each other.  Matching necklaces that says “Best Friends”.  Teddy Long comes in and congratulates Layla for retaining this past Sunday.  He says next week, Layla will defend the Woman’s Title against Tiffany.  Then they make fun of Teddy, “Holla Playa” and even does his dance jig, which was funny.

Kofi Kingston is ready for his match, coming up next.

Kofi is coming out in a non title match against Dolph Ziggler.

It’s funny, Vicky Guerrero, who came out with Dolph Ziggler yelled at Michael McGillicutty, who accompanied Kofi to the ring and threw him out of the ringside area during the match.  My question is why do the NXT rookies accompany their pros during the other shows when it has nothing to do with NXT?  And if they do, how about we see a segment with the pro working with the rookie on how to become a WWE star?  I want to see that, I really do, it makes it more realistic.

Dolph defeated Kofi when Vicky distracted Kofi, grabbed his foot and Dolph reached out and gave him the Zig Zag.  He then waited and slapped on the Sleeper for Kofi, Kofi was put to sleep.  So you have to figure Dolph has now become the number one contender to the Intercontinental Title.

Big Show is in the back, he is ready for his match.  He high fives Rosa Mendes, who still miraculously is jumping ropes, someone needs to call Guinness world book of records here.

We now get to see a new segment for “Dashing” Cody Rhodes, he is showing us the proper way on how to trim nose hairs.  Very funny.

Big Show was supposed to face off against Luke Gallows, but CM Punk, without a mask this week and still totally bald had Show face off against the Mysterious Masked SES member.  And Show ended the match when he lifted up his mask to finally reveal him as Joey Mercury.  Then gave him a chokeslam to win the match.

Rey is being interviewed by Josh Matthews.  Rey admit he is still in pain with his ankle, but he will compete tonight and find a way to win.  He will move on to Summerslam and defeat Kane so he can live his dream once again.  He will live his dream as the World Heavyweight Champion.  Keep dreaming Rey, nothing wrong with that.  Their best 2 of 3 falls match between Rey Mysterio and Jack Swagger.  The match is next.

Raw Rebound is up now with John Cena choosing his team for the 7 on 7 encounter at Summerslam against the NEXUS.

Rey wins the first fall in a long match that was resulted to Jack being DQ’d because he would not break the count after Rey got to the ropes when Jack put him in an ankle lock.  The ref DQ’d him and we go to commercial.

Jack wins the 2nd fall very quickly when Rey tried to use the 619 on Jack, but Jack caught him and gave him the Ankle Lock.  The series is tied at 1-1.

Rey takes the 3rd and deciding fall when he rolls over Jack for a 1….2…3.  Very quick ending, and the entire match was telling a story on how much in pain Rey’s ankles are from Jack.  Swagger attacked Rey from behind and was giving him another ankle lock, but Kane came out to help Rey, chasing Jack away.  He then held up Rey’s hand in celebration.  Then in an instant he looked straight at him and was going after him.  Rey was running for his life with Kane trying to catch him, but he got caught in a 619 after sliding out of the chokeslam.  Kane got the upper hand at the end of the night.

Kevin’s Thoughts:

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Glen Jacobs.  He has been with the company in one capacity or another for 15 years.  His character Kane has been around since 1997.  He has the ability to stay with the character, but update it on occasion.  He won the WWE Title for the first time in 1998, and more or less had a cup of coffee with it by keeping it for 24 hours.  I’d like to see him keep it for a few months now, but that might not happen.  However, he has gone through many horrible angles, including the infamous “Katie Vick” storyline, and here he is, still standing.  I give him a tremendous amount of credit and respect for that.  Congratulations Glen, you earned it.

Now for the show, the matches were much more focused tonight, and that is always a good thing.  I’d like to see Christian and Matt Hardy remain as a tag team for a while, I mean what else are they doing with either man?  Then you can split them up after they lose the tag team titles.  It’s also safe to say Dolph will get an IC Title match, probably at Summerslam.  As far as the main event match, it was fun to watch the 2 of 3 falls.  I grew up watching Wrestling where 2 of 3 falls was the norm.  I am glad they bring it back on occasion, and the two men were the right choices.  Very good show tonight.  If you have thoughts or comments, drop me an email at DJKevinGillman75@aol.com or give me a comment on here.  I also want you to check out Hittheropesradio.com.  It is a very good site, run by great people, and I am not just saying that because they run my WWE Superstars report there, they really do have a great site.  Also check out my other site about the Cleveland Indians, TheTribeSource.com.
