WWE Monday Night Raw 7/26/10…The Heat Is On

Before I start the show, I want to wish a Happy Birthday to my Mom, Linda Gillman.  I am going to pull a “Jack Swagger” and dedicate this report to her.

We see the video showcasing John Cena setting up his 7 man team to face NEXUS at Summerslam.

We are live in San Antonio, starting the show off with John Cena.  Cena said a few weeks ao, NEXUS came out and wrecked havoc, and nobody was safe, until last week.  Cena formed a 7 man team, enemies, and allies together and they will defeat NEXUS at Summerslam.  With each beating, NEXUS grew stronger, and at some point, they would take over the show.  But here is the thing, Cena is again trying to make jokes about his team.  This isn’t The Justice League….

And Chris Jericho comes out to the ring.

Cena is trying to introduce Jericho as being a part of his team.  The fans give him a chant of Y2J.  He was in the back and he was waiting for Cena to say it’s “HIS TEAM”.  People have come up to him and said “I am glad you have seen the light” but he says he doesn’t.  This is HIS team, Cena said fine, go ahead.  Jericho then said you don’t get it, he knows Barrett better than anyone and in fact Wade asked him to help start NEXUS in the first place, so he knows how to stop them.

Cena smacked the mic away from Jericho and said it’s not about John, it’s not about Jericho, it’s about fighting for the company and the business that he loves.  I wish Cena would just stick to this serious tone.  Jericho told him to never smack the mic off of him again.  He said he knows he is a vital part to the team, but the thing is there are 2 dangerous entity’s in WWE.  The NEXUS and John Cena.  Cena can say or do whatever he wants, and the “hypocrites” will cheer for him regardless.  So after they take care of NEXUS at Summerslam, Jericho vows to take care of Cena after that.  Cena and Jericho then go face to face, but the email sound goes off, and the crowd groans.

Cole read a statement from the GM, the GM said tonight, there will be an elimination 14 man tag team match with NEXUS taking on 7 men the GM chooses.  Also tonight, Cena and Jericho taking on 2 men of the Raw GM’s choice.  If they aren’t “down with that, he has 2 words for them”.  Where have I heard that before?  Good opening segment though.

Sheamus comes out to scout Randy Orton for the next match.  Randy’s opponent is Jey Uso.  Oh great, now the Uso’s are just glorified jobbers, and nothing else.

Yup, I was right.  Wow, I don’t think Jey even had an offensive move, except maybe a few punches.  Jimmie Uso attacked Randy from behind after the match, but Randy gets him back, Sheamus tries to kick Randy, but Orton ducked him and Sheamus kicked Jimmie instead and Randy RKO’d Sheamus.

AWESOME!!!!  The Miz comes out with the briefcase and hands the ref the briefcase, just as Sheamus was about to get up, Orton RKO’d The Miz.  Putting Randy over big, big BIG time.

Edge was conflicted because Edge wants to take revenge against NEXTUS, but he wished Ted Dibiase was on the team.  I mean, Great Khali is big and everything, but he is clumsy.  Ted said when he beats John Morrison tonight, Cena will see his error and put him on the team over either John or Khali.  Edge said if Cena doesn’t see that, then Edge will have to take care of Khali himself.

Ranjin Singh heard all of this going on.

We come back and see Sheamus and The Miz in the ring arguing, when the email sound goes off, and Cole messes up by saying

“May I have your attention please, I have received another manager, another email from the General Manager” he is sounding more and more like Mike Adamle.

The GM said that he has found his tag team to face Jericho and Cena tonight, The Miz and Sheamus.

A Summerslam moment, from 1988.  The night The Ultimate Warrior becomes the Intercontinental Champion, defeating The Honkytonk Man.

Edge is backstage and Khali is very angry, Ranjin informs Edge that he told him what Edge said.  Khali doesn’t believe Edge has respect for him, tonight, Edge is facing Khali with Khali’s spot on the line.

Before the Edge Vs Khali match, Cole said that during the break, he received another email from the Raw GM and one of the 7 competitors taking on NEXUS is none other than Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Edge going against Great Khali is up next.

During the match, NEXUS comes out, Edge sees this and he escapes out of the ring.  NEXUS comes into the ring and allows Khali to get out of the ring, instead of attacking him.  So Khali leaves the ring too.

Coming up next is the 14 man tag team match between 7 men and 7 NEXUS members.

The 7 men NEXUS are facing off are Mark Henry, Evan Bourne, Hart Dynasty, Goldust, Yoshi Tatsu, and Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Yoshi Tatsu is eliminated rather quickly by Michael Tarver’s Powerslam.

During a commercial break, Jerry “The King” Lawler was eliminated by Heath Slater when Heath did a Jumping Neckbreaker.  The one positive thing is Jerry did the fist drop from the middle rope on Justin Gabriel, so unlike Tatsu, at least Jerry was able to shine a bit.

NEXUS now has a 7 on 5 advantage.

David Hart Smith is pinned by Heath when Slater did his Sweetness (Jumping Russian Leg Sweep)

7 on 4 tag team match now.

Goldust is eliminated after David Otunga does a Spinebuster.  Darren Young grabbed Goldust’s leg and distracted him for a second for Otunga to pull off his finishing move.

7 on 3 tag team match now.

My Gawd, Mark Henry gets flattened by Skip Sheffield’s Lariant.

7 on 2 tag team match now.

Tyson Kidd got eliminated by Darren Young when Young pulled off the Full Nelson.

7 on 1….Evan Bourne against the World.

And that’s all she wrote….Evan gets crushed by Wade Barrett’s Wasteland.  Evan also was attacked by NEXUS after the match, including Justin Gabriel pulling off a 450 splash.  This could be a preview to Summerslam.  By the way, their epic encounter at the PPV will indeed be an elimination match.  Boy, this match could have been huge if they held it for Bragging Rights.

They get on the mic and say Cena’s team will be the downfall because they are 7 individuals taking on 1 UNIT.  They will sacrifice themselves for the team, can Cena’s team?  They don’t think so.  This was a very effective promo and entire segment.  I loved this exhibition.

The Miz is in the back with Sheamus.  Sheamus says Miz thinks he get Sheamus when he’s vulnerable, it won’t happen.  Miz suggests they have a match tonight, after they defeat Cena and Jericho.  Miz throws Sheamus back into the wolves, Cena gives Sheamus an Attitude Adjustment, Jericho does The Walls of Jericho, and Sheamus has had enough, Miz gives him the Skull Crushing Finale.  Sheamus is starting to get upset, and throws the briefcase across the room.

The Bella Twins come out, I guess WWE told them if they don’t start wrestling, they will be let go?

It will be a one on one match with Brie Bella and Alicia Fox.

Alicia gives Brie the Ax Kick, they tried the switcharoo, but Jillian Hall comes out and puts a stop to it and the match is done.

Jillian Hall gets on the mic and she says she has a gift for her, Jillian will sing.  She tried to sing “You are the champion” by Queen, but Alicia gives her an Ax Kick, to boot.

R-Truth is out there dancing and rapping.  So, another competitor in the big 14 man tag team match at Summerslam isn’t taking it serious.  He is watching the match.

Ted Dibiase is taking on John Morrison.

Dibiase won when Maryse tried to interfere, but R-Truth stopped her, looking out for Joe Mo, the problem is it backfired.  Ted tried to pin him with using his feet on the ropes, Truth moved the feet off, Ted looked at Truth, Joe Mo tried to attack Dibiase, but Ted moved out-of-the-way and Morrison collided with Truth and Ted rolled him over for the win.

The story here is Cena’s team just isn’t getting along.  Morrison and Truth both were arguing at each other, Cena and Jericho can’t get along, Edge and Khali fought each other tonight, Bret Hart is the only one smart.  He isn’t there and instead is training in Calgary.

The Summerslam official song if by Jet, it’s called “Rip it up” off the CD Shine On.  They showcase the story behind what happened last week when Cena formed his team facing off against NEXUS at Summerslam.

Josh Matthews is interviewing Randy Orton, Josh wants to know if Randy’s RKO on The Miz means that he would rather face Sheamus at Summerslam?  Randy says before he RKO’d Miz, he gave Sheamus a RKO.  So it doesn’t matter who enters Summerslam as WWE Champion, what matters is they will be answered by a RKO regardless.

Maon event tag team match is next, Sheamus and The Miz taking on Chris Jericho and John Cena.

The Miz and Sheamus pins Jericho and Cena when Jericho gave Cena a hot tag, but Jericho gives Cena a Codebreaker right when Cena is setting Sheamus up with an Attitude Adjustment.  Miz makes a blind tag and pins Cena.  Then all hell breaks loose.  Jericho comes in and gives Cena a Walls of Jericho, Cean reverses it and gives Chris a STF.  Khali tries to come out and break them up, but Edge spears Khali.  Morrison and Truth come out, but then they get in each other’s faces and Khali gives Truth and Morrison a Khali chop.  This ends the show.

Kevin’s Thoughts:

I guess this was a mixed bag for me.  On one hand, there is no doubt, Summerslam will feature 2 big Raw matches, but everyone else is just floundering away.  I think there should have been a direct match booked or at least set up, but there wasn’t.  However, the big 2 matches told some fantastic storytelling.  There is the Unit Vs Individuals here, and I would love to see some mic work the next few weeks between the two groups on that subject.  The context is success breeds ego.  You can say you are a 12 time Champion, you are the “Best in the world at what you do” but the bottom line is individuals will never beat a team any day of the week.  The 14 man tag team match proved that tonight.  You have 7 rookies, all starting their WWE careers.  They are facing off against 7 men who have accomplished everything without their teammates.  To me, it is the perfect storyline, and although I would love to see NEXUS pull it off, I just don’t see it.  But clearly, they are being pushed to the moon right now.

Speaking of being pushed, they are clearly pushing Randy Orton as a viable contender, and why not?  Orton might actually be the biggest superstar right now, and by the reaction he gets when he comes to the ring, the fans are loving the character.  He and Sheamus should tear it up at Summerslam.  I honestly would rather see this match than HHH-Sheamus encounter that was originally supposed to happen.  They should step it up in 3 or 4 more gears in the coming weeks.

Other than that, everyone else was there, and I just can’t get behind that.  Summerslam to me must have about 7 matches and establish every single one of them within 2 weeks to go, which should be next week.  So overall, a decent show, nothing great.  Certainly a step down from last week.  Hopefully next week will be better.  Drop me an email at DJKevinGillman75@aol.com, let me know your thoughts.  Or give me a comment here.
